{"id":56,"date":"2009-07-08T16:52:23","date_gmt":"2009-07-08T20:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irenejackson.com\/songblog\/?p=56"},"modified":"2013-10-08T15:56:57","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T23:56:57","slug":"write-about-what-you-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/irenejackson.com\/songblog\/write-about-what-you-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Write About What You Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"580\" height=\"360\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/5YGc4zOqozo&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As the story goes, a Halifax band called <strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sons of Maxwell\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sonsofmaxwell.com\/\">Sons of Maxwell<\/a><\/strong> had a week-long tour of Nebraska last year.\u00a0 They flew <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United Airlines\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.united.com\/\">United Airlines<\/a> for a quick turn-around in Chicago and were sitting on the plane when another passenger (who didn&#8217;t know they were musicians) yelled out that they were &#8220;throwing guitars outside&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>With a sick feeling in the pit of their stomachs, the band members looked out the airplane windows to see United employees throwing a bass guitar, which they recognized as theirs.\u00a0 At the end of the flight and once they had claimed their baggage, they noted that a $3500 Taylor guitar had been badly damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Carroll, the prime songwriter for the group, tried a number of times over a nine month period to get some kind of compensation for the damage, but his cries fell on deaf ears.\u00a0 Finally, he asked himself what Michael Moore might do if he were a musician in the same situation.\u00a0 What he came up with were three songs, one called &#8220;United Breaks Guitars&#8221;.\u00a0 His plan was to produce videos for each one and post them on YouTube, one after the other.\u00a0 The YouTube video for &#8220;United Breaks Guitars&#8221; received over 15,000 hits after only a couple of days, and finally caught the attention of United Airlines who are now ready to compensate.<\/p>\n<p>Well, duh.<\/p>\n<p>So, folks&#8230;the key to success is to write about what you know \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Success may be fleeting, but these guys could turn all of that attention (I just saw their story show up on CNN!) into all kinds of positive things like new gigs and CD sales.\u00a0 Way to go!<\/p>\n<p><em>IJ<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Reblog this post [with Zemanta]\" href=\"http:\/\/reblog.zemanta.com\/zemified\/35c82898-ccb8-4081-8109-149d1f5c0f5c\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: medium none; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/reblog_e.png?x-id=35c82898-ccb8-4081-8109-149d1f5c0f5c\" alt=\"Reblog this post [with Zemanta]\" \/><\/a><span class=\"zem-script more-related pretty-attribution\"><script src=\"http:\/\/static.zemanta.com\/readside\/loader.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the story goes, a Halifax band called Sons of Maxwell had a week-long tour of Nebraska last year.\u00a0 They flew United Airlines for a quick turn-around in Chicago and were sitting on the plane when another passenger (who didn&#8217;t know they were musicians) yelled out that they were &#8220;throwing guitars outside&#8221;.
