is always a subjective thing, and you&#8217;ll probably disagree with some of my choices.\u00a0 But I do know a thing or two about covers.\u00a0 I have performed original material and I have performed many covers over the years.\u00a0 I teach guitar, so I play other artist&#8217;s and band&#8217;s songs all the time.\u00a0 Most people want to play a song exactly as they remember it, and why not?\u00a0 That&#8217;s what they have heard and loved.<\/p>\n<p>What makes a great cover, in my humble opinion, is an artist or a band that makes the song their own.\u00a0 This is not an easy task.\u00a0 To make a song your own, you have to have some element that stays true to the original.\u00a0 Like, it should be recognizable :-).\u00a0 But then you have to make it better.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s the hard part.\u00a0 Some artists and bands just play it their own way and it works.\u00a0 But others over do the &#8220;original&#8221; idea and ruin the song all together.\u00a0 The worst, however, is when a band or artist stays too true to the original.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re going to do that, why bother?<\/p>\n<p>I will probably post a list of my favourite covers in future, but for the time being, here is my list of covers that didn&#8217;t do it for me.\u00a0 Below you can listen to each version and judge for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sweet Dreams\" rel=\"amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sweet-Dreams-Marilyn-Manson\/dp\/B000005JUZ%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000005JUZ\">Sweet Dreams<\/a> &#8211; Marilyn Manson <\/strong>&#8211; Oh my.\u00a0 If ever a song was butchered, this is the one.\u00a0 But I think that&#8217;s what sweet Marilyn wanted, didn&#8217;t he?\u00a0 Why Annie ever let him (or her) do it, I&#8217;ll never know.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m6VojYGrnpg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saturday_Night%27s_Alright_for_Fighting\">Saturday Night&#8217;s Alright For Fighting<\/a> &#8211; Nickelback<\/strong> &#8211; there&#8217;s a &#8220;love to hate Nickelback&#8221; thing going on here in Canada.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t mind them.\u00a0 But the song simply has too many chords for these guys to handle.\u00a0 Not power chords, guys, actual chords.\u00a0 I originally heard this at a hockey game and I was completely dismayed.\u00a0 It was even more disappointing to find out that a Canadian band was responsible.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A4cGQLzi7xk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Love Hurts &#8211; Nazareth<\/strong> &#8211; I have never liked this song, no matter how many times I&#8217;ve heard it.\u00a0 The howling lead vocal just destroys an otherwise lovely melody.\u00a0 Sorry.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6pHNkOQCIzk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>California Girls &#8211; <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"David Lee Roth\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davidleeroth.com\">David Lee Roth<\/a><\/strong> -again, another terrible vocal.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t help but see self-involved David Lee prancing around on stage in his lycra pants everytime I hear it.\u00a0 No wonder Van Halen got rid of him :-).\u00a0 But all kidding aside, the original had a lot of vocals and I really don&#8217;t think it was meant to be a solo.\u00a0 Definitely loses something in the translation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zc4FXHunHMw\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"gsWidget\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Beast of Burden (song)\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beast_of_Burden_%28song%29\">Beast of Burden<\/a> &#8211; Bette Midler<\/strong> I love Better Midler but I&#8217;ve never understood why she recorded this song.\u00a0 Was it just filler?\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t suit her voice or style at all.\u00a0 She tries to get down and growly, but that only makes it worse.<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D4R9FiKE0Tk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><strong>My Way &#8211; Sex Pistols<\/strong> No.<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WIXg9KUiy00\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><strong>Superstition &#8211; Jonas Brothers <\/strong> Okay, let&#8217;s face it, no version of Superstition can live up to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Stevie Wonder\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.steviewonder.net\">Stevie Wonder<\/a>&#8216;s version.  The Jonas Brother&#8217;s performing with Stevie himself on an awards show, however, was so awful, I wondered why Stevie even said yes.\u00a0 Little boys trying to sing such a balsy song just doesn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 Stick to the pop\/rock, fellas.<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kmIEvniOYiE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><strong>Slow Hand &#8211; <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Conway Twitty\" rel=\"imdb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0878617\/\">Conway Twitty<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; the twang in his vocal just doesn&#8217;t suit the bluesy original by the Pointer Sisters.\u00a0 And somehow the idea of a country guy singing about&#8230;well, how to pleasure a woman&#8230;feels somehow yucky.\u00a0 It just ain&#8217;t right.<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/prC2iOA5SmQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><strong>Superstar &#8211; <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sonic Youth\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sonicyouth.com\/\">Sonic Youth<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; I almost get what this version was trying to accomplish.  It was trying to be dark and even a little weird.  And it was.
